Real-Life Math -- Solution

You're an on-site property manager at an office building. You're preparing an invoice for light bulbs for one of your tenants.

First, determine how much each light bulb costs:

Twelve halogen light bulbs cost $49.95. 49.95 / 12 = 4.16

Fluorescent tubes cost $2.95 each

Three standard incandescent light bulbs cost $6.75. 6.75 / 3 = 2.25

Next, determine the total for each type of light bulb:

Halogen: 21 * $4.16 = $87.36

Fluorescent tubes: 13 * $2.95 = $38.35

Standard incandescent: 16 * $2.25 = $36.00

Subtotal the cost of light bulbs before tax:

$87.36 + $38.35 + $36.00 = $161.71

Now add 5 percent sales tax:

$161.71 * 0.05 = $8.09

Finally, add the tax to the subtotal for the grand total:

$161.71 + $8.09 = $169.80

Here's the invoice you could prepare:

21 halogen light bulbs at $4.16 each = $87.36

13 fluorescent tubes at $2.95 each = $38.35

16 standard incandescent light bulbs at $2.25 each = $36.00

Subtotal for light bulbs = $161.71

Sales tax (5%) = $8.09

Grand total = $169.80

"Everything is very basic math or templates you plug numbers in to. There's no algebra," says Kristy Ludwar. She's an on-site property administrator at a large office building.
