Real-Life Math -- Solution

1. What were your net sales?

Net sales = $3,890 - $137 - $94 - $18
Net sales = $3,641

Your net sales total $3,641.

2. How much will you go home with in tips?

Tips = $480 - ($3,641 x 0.04)
Tips = $334.36

Tips per bartender = $334.36 / 2
Tips per bartender = $167.18

You'll go home with $167.18 in tips.

Bartenders constantly use basic math. They have to add drink prices together in their head and calculate change. When it gets busy, they might figure out several orders at a time. And, like in the above example, they have to cash out at the end of each shift.

Most bars have only 3 or 4 different prices for drinks. Often, many drinks will be lumped together at a special price. This helps when figuring out totals.

Amanda Talmage says that bartenders definitely need their basic math. "You have to be able to count. You have to know your percentages for tipping people out at the end of the night."
