Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You do your research without telling the other scientist.

Things might have turned out differently if Michael Steinitz had selected this course of action, but he didn't.

Steinitz decided to display openness about his work. He says this is an important attitude to have in science.

He telephoned his competitor. The conversation sparked a friendly competition between them.

In the end, Steinitz completed his research project before the other scientist. The scientist was so impressed by Steinitz's work that he invited him to complete his research in his company's well-equipped facilities.

Had Steinitz decided not to tell the other scientist, he likely would not have received that opportunity. His decision also led to other career opportunities, including a teaching position.

Many times in your career, you will find that you will need to use your best judgment. You will discover that networking with other people in your field will bring you many rewards.
