Film costs are a major factor in the production of low-budget films -- ranking behind the cost of actors and stage sets. Your producer wants you to estimate how much you'll spend on film before the production starts.

You know that your final film will run for approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes -- or 140 minutes. You also know that the average movie represents only one-sixth of the amount of film shot. In other words, the vast majority of the film shot ends up on the cutting room floor.

You're shooting 16-mm film. It costs about $500 for 30 minutes of film, plus another $1,000 per 30 minutes for developing. How much will you tell your producer to set aside for film costs?
