Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Here's what your cast letter might look like:

"Welcome and congratulations! You're about to become part of an ambitious and exciting film project that covers more than 75 years and four generations.

"I'm writing each of you to explain what I have in mind for the film Family Secrets and how each of you can help make the production a success. This letter is prompted in part by the fact that there are nearly 70 characters with speaking roles in the film, making it impossible for me to spend the time I would like with each of you.

"This film is borne out of my own childhood, when my friend told me that his great-great-great grandfather had ordered hundreds of people hanged in Eastern Europe. At the time, I thought the boy was boasting, but the image of him telling me that story in hushed, shamed tones never left me. I created this fictional account of a family struggling with its own past as a result.

"This film has an intensity that I hope is reflected in the script. But the rest of the intensity will come from you. In order to deliver the emotional punch that I want, each performance must be perfect. Remember, with a cast this large, the audience cannot latch on to any one character. Each of you must get into the audience's heart in the few moments you have on screen.

"I'm looking forward to working with each of you. I have a feeling great things lie ahead."

Your Director

Director Sabrina Craig says communication skills are vital for film directors. "They're having to translate the needs of a whole bunch of different people into one final product."
