Real-Life Math -- Solution

You and your producer are setting aside money for film. First, figure out how much film you'll shoot. Since 140 minutes represents roughly one-sixth of the total footage shot, you can calculate the original total this way

140 minutes x 6 = 840 minutes of raw film
840 minutes / 30-minute segments = 28

So you'll need 28 half hours of film. Each half hour will cost you $1,500 -- that's $500 for the film and $1,000 for developing.

28 x $1,500 = $42,000

You should tell the producer to set aside at least $42,000 for film.

Shawn Watson is a producer. He considers math skills extremely important, especially for the new directors with tight budgets.

"You sort of start off at the bottom and climb your way up. That involves a lot of budgeting and a lot of putting together of financial structures and calculation of tax credits."
