Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You put your article away and see months of work go to waste.

Despite the fact that you have worked for months researching and writing this article on the relationship between anthropologists and lawyers, you decide that it would be too risky to publish it. It could harm everyone involved -- you, the lawyers and the court cases.

This is the real-life decision made by Miller. He was faced with this tough situation when he documented the preparation process between himself and lawyers in a native fishing rights case.

"Recently, I wrote a piece about the relationship between anthropologists and lawyers. I had worked on it for some months. However, I couldn't publish it because it revealed too much. If I had published it, it could have hurt the lawyers and myself because you can't show a process of changing judgment -- it [damages] credibility."

Miller says the decision was tough because he had put so much effort into his writing and research. But in the end, he knows his choice was the right one. "I made the only choice I could. [Other anthropologists] would have done the same thing for the same reason. "
