Real-Life Math -- Solution

It's been a long day for our beginning stylist. She sits down for the first time in hours and calculates how much she's earned in commissions and tips.

To begin with, calculate how much money the beginning stylist brought into the salon:

5 haircuts x $20 = $100
1 long hair perm = $62
3 colors x $28 = $84
2 wash and styles x $18 = $36
2 regular perms x $45 = $90

The total is $100 + $62 + $84 + $36 + $90 = $372

Now, calculate the commission.

38 percent of $372
0.38 x $372 = $141.36

Add the commission and tips for the total income:

$141.36 + $23.50 = $164.86

Now, calculate the cost of renting the chair for 1 day, based on a 5-day workweek:

$98 divided by 5 = $19.60 per day

Subtract the rental cost from the total income:

$164.86 - $19.60 = $145.26

She earned $145.26 for the day.

This is her gross income for the day. Her net income will be less than this, since she still has to pay her taxes.
