Ophthalmic Medical Technicians Career Video

Insider Info

Ophthalmic assistants help ophthalmologists (medical physicians trained in medical and surgical eye care) with examinations, specialized testing and surgery. They also assist patients and show them how to use eye dressings, contact lenses, safety glasses and protective shields.

These medical assistants may also administer medications, such as eye drops, under the direction of the physician. They're also responsible for maintaining the tools of the trade, including both optical and surgical instruments.

Full-time ophthalmic assistants generally work 40 hours per week. Occasionally, some work part time. Some evening or weekend work may be required. Success requires attention to detail, excellent communication skills and a willingness to work as a team member.
