You are an ophthalmic assistant at a laser surgery center for eye treatment. The center uses computer-controlled lasers to do the surgery.

"We use math quite a bit for calculating formulas to punch into the computer to generate a treatment," says Donna White. She is an ophthalmic assistant. "These numbers are needed to make the visual correction. We need to figure out the correct refractive factor."

In a normal eye, light enters the eye and hits the retina (the back wall of the eye) at a precise focal point. Eyes are often different sizes and have different shapes, which affect a person's vision. The distance from the front wall of the eye, behind the cornea, to the back wall is the diameter of a circle.

Many of the calculations for eye exams are complex. Try a simple calculation to figure out one eye measurement:

The diameter of Rick's eye is 4.14 cm. The diameter of Bob's eye is 3.82 cm. Assuming that the eyes are perfect circles, what is the circumference of each of these eyes?

Formula to use:
C = Pi x D

C = circumference
D = diameter
Pi = 3.14
