Real-Life Math

"As a university teacher of 12 years and practitioner of 30 years, I have found that one of the biggest myths held by high school teachers and students alike is that one needs to be good in math in order to go into architecture. This is not true," says architect Rod Henmi.

He explains that architects use math for structural design. During a post-secondary architecture program, calculus is often required. But there are many aspects of architecture a student can excel in even if they struggle with math.

Architects use scale drawings as part of their work. They can't draw life-sized building plans -- their drawings must be much smaller. But they must make all parts of their drawings exact reduced equals of the real thing.

They will choose to have 20 feet in real life be represented by one inch on paper, for instance, and calculate all other measures represented in their drawing to match this scale.

You're an architect working on a scale drawing of a building. The dimensions of a building are 250 feet high and 120 feet wide. If one inch represents 20 feet on a scale drawing, what are the dimensions of the building on the drawing?
