Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

Follow the client's orders.

You're an architect working for a firm that does sustainable design. Your client does not want to invest in sustainable design. They think it will be too expensive and take too long. You follow their orders and design a building that meets their requirements.

As the building is being built, energy costs continue to rise. By the time the building is complete you do some quick figures. You realize your client could have made back the investment in sustainable building products in one year. The costs of operating the building you delivered are much higher than the energy-efficient building you could have designed.

Looking back, you regret not pushing your client more. There is nothing you can do about your regrets. You can only take a different driving route so you don't have to pass the office building you designed.

"Practice is all about decision making, some harder than others," says architect Michael Willis.
