Real-Life Math -- Solution

As an architect, you're working on a scale drawing of a building. The dimensions of a building are 250 feet high and 120 feet wide. One inch represents 20 feet on your scale drawing.

First, let's figure out the width on your scale drawing:

If 20 feet = 1 inch on paper
Width on paper = 120/20 = 6 inches

Now let's figure out the height:

If 20 feet = 1 inch on paper
Height on paper = 250/20 = 12.5 inches

On your drawing, the building's dimensions should be 6 inches wide by 12.5 inches high.

"I have encountered many graduate architecture students who had been counselled in high school not to go into architecture because they had poor math skills and who ended up delaying the start of their career by going into other majors. Many of these students did very well," says Rod Henmi. He is an architect and design director in San Francisco, CA. He also taught architecture at a university.
