Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

The customer is always right.

You decide to go with the more expensive system. Your client is satisfied with the system and for a couple of weeks you don't hear a complaint. But unfortunately, her more knowledgeable friends tell her she was taken for a ride. They say a cheaper system would have been perfect for her needs.

She doesn't tell them that you tried to talk her out of the more expensive system. Of course they ask which company she was dealing with and they remember your name -- now you have a reputation as a company that is out for itself, which is bad for business.

Most businesspeople will tell you the old saying "the customer is always right" always applies. Professional computer programmers may agree, but argue the customer may need advising before they can decide what's right for them.

"As a computer programmer, you're not only a technical expert, you're a service provider," says New York computer programmer Jan Gillanders. "It's important for me to provide a service to my clients based on their needs. Otherwise, I'm not doing my job."
