Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You insist the client choose a system that would suit her needs better.

You spend some time with the client showing her how her needs match up with the cheaper program. She's still not convinced after your explanation, so you arrange for her to meet with another retailer who uses the less expensive system.

After seeing the cheaper system in action, the client decides to take your advice. She returns to your office and purchases the system you recommended, thanking you for saving her money. She's very pleased and tells you she will be letting other businesspeople know about your honesty and integrity.

This is the real-life decision made by programmer Troy Ryder. Ryder says programmers often deal with clients whose technical knowledge is limited. "Clients often have a general idea of what they want when they come in to see us," Ryder says.

"It's up to us to define their needs and develop the best system for them -- that's why demos are important. You never know how that's going to affect your reputation. It's always a good idea to act in an ethical manner."
