Real-Life Math -- Solution

To determine the percentage of the patients per ward, you must add together the number of all patients in all the wards. Remember, don't include the emergency patients admitted and released or retained. These patients have already been included in the total number of emergency room patients.

Children's ward -- 45 patients
Cardiac unit -- 27 patients
Intensive-care unit -- 21 patients
Emergency (total number of patients admitted) -- 212 patients
(patients admitted and released) -- 147 patients
(patients admitted and retained) -- 65 patients
Maternity ward -- 31 patients
Pre-surgery -- 67 patients
Recovery ward -- 61 patients

Total number of patients = 464

Children's ward
45 patients / 464 total patients = 9.7 percent
Cardiac unit
27 patients / 464 total patients = 5.8 percent
Intensive-care unit
21 patients / 464 total patients = 4.5 percent
Emergency
212 patients / 464 total patients = 45.8 percent
Patients admitted and released
147 patients / 464 total patients = 31.6 percent
Patients admitted and retained
65 patients / 464 total patients = 14 percent
Maternity ward
31 patients / 464 total patients = 6.7 percent
Pre-surgery
67 patients / 464 total patients = 14.5 percent
Recovery ward
61 patients / 464 total patients = 13 percent

Now that you've done you calculations, you know the percentage of patients in each ward and resources can be distributed in relation to the figures you've collected. This will help you determine what kind of program you'll need. "We're problem solvers," says Troy Ryder, a professional programmer. "We seek solutions."

In order of volume, the percentage of patients is as follows:

Intensive care unit -- 4.5 percent
Cardiac unit -- 5.8 percent
Maternity ward -- 6.7 percent
Children's ward -- 9.7 percent
Recovery ward - 13 percent
Pre-surgery -- 14.5 percent
Emergency -- 45.8 percent
