Report on the birth of baby Cartell:

On Jan. 4, patient Emily Cartell gave birth to a baby girl, yet to be named at the time of this report. The child was delivered weighing seven pounds, three ounces at 7:10 p.m. (19:10).

There were no complications during labor, which lasted seven hours and 15 minutes. As her midwife, I was called to attend the birth at 4:30 p.m., when the contractions were 10 minutes apart and between 20 and 30 seconds each.

No medication was given to the patient during or after labor, and both mother and child are doing well. The placenta was delivered 15 minutes after birth at 7:25 p.m. (19:25).

The umbilical cord was cut and tied at 7:45 p.m. There were no complications with the severing of the cord. The labor and delivery went smoothly for mother and child.

Midwives must be good communicators. Kathy Wethy is a midwife. She says communication skills are important in her field. "It is very important for a midwife to be able to clearly outline to a client what's going," she says.
