Real-Life Communication -- Solution

You are a glaciologist interested in drilling into the Greenland ice sheets. But first, in order to generate funding, you need to explain the importance of ice core data to the public. This is how you answer some of their questions about ice research.

1. What materials are preserved in the annual variations within glacial ice?

You can find chemicals, ions, dust, trace metals and radioactive materials and gases.

2. Why are the air samples of particular interest?

The air samples are particularly important because they allow scientists to determine the amount of CO2 and CH4 in the atmosphere as well as the relative amounts of oxygen isotopes present in the atmosphere.

3. What can oxygen isotopes indicate?

Oxygen isotopes can indicate changes in global temperatures.
