Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You wait until morning.

This is the real-life decision that Brian Moorman, a glaciologist, would recommend.

"Field safety is a big issue for glaciologists," says Moorman. "You constantly have to make decisions about how to proceed."

Glaciers have deep crevasses that pose dangers to glaciologists. These crevasses can be hidden under snow, and so scientists have to navigate carefully. "It's a tricky thing to work on ice," he says. "You have to always be thinking about the dangers, and have to trust and listen to others in your group.

"It may depend on the situation how dangerous it is, but you need to always be aware of the dangers of being on a glacier," he says.

It usually isn't smart to make quick decisions, especially at the end of a day, or when you are tired.
