Real-Life Communication

A big part of chemical engineering is keeping an eye open for opportunities to fund your research. It also means using your communication skills to get that funding. When a corporation, foundation or government has grant money, it usually issues a request for proposals.

Writing a proposal means being able to quickly, clearly and accurately explain even the most complex plans. Each request will draw hundreds of proposals, so some only get a quick reading. But flair isn't the goal here -- it's following the format, which usually consists of a one-paragraph summary of the work and its value as well as a lot of other routine paperwork.

You're a chemical engineer working on a team that wants to create the strongest, lightest bulletproof vests ever made. It involves highly technical experiments using plastics and other materials in combination -- you're trying new combinations in search of the perfect mixture. There's no guarantee you'll succeed. But if you do, you'll be able to equip law enforcement officers who are reluctant to wear the current vests -- that's more than 600,000 potential customers in North America alone.

Now it's time to write a grant proposal. Put your best foot forward without being unrealistic, and try to explain the technical side without getting bogged down. We'll give you up to 100 words to get the job done.
