Real-Life Decision Making

As a chemical engineer at a large institution, you work alongside other researchers. Each of you is involved in your own project, but you keep track of what's going on with your colleagues' work.

One day, you spend a few minutes at the coffee machine talking to a colleague about her project. She's excited. She believes she's made a breakthrough that will put the company on the map and set her star rising rapidly within the company.

You question her about her work and realize you worked on a similar project a few years before. That's when she says something that doesn't quite sound right. She's used a streamlined process to create a steel reinforcing agent and skipped an important step. The reinforcing agent will make the steel weaker in the long run!

You immediately recognize her flaw but are reluctant to speak up. She's so confident that her work has broken new ground! You don't want to bring her crashing down to earth.

If you allow her to bring her work to her superiors, they'll undoubtedly recognize the problem. Her reputation will be damaged. You could approach her before her meeting with the company executives and gently ask her about the process, without saying that you recognize the flaw. What do you do?
