Chemical engineers use math every day. While computers and calculators help carry the load, a strong background in basic math is essential. Each time a chemical engineer mixes a formula, stopping to do simple calculations on a machine slows the process.

You're researching a new type of fiber that will make running shoes 30 percent lighter. The fiber is made of several different chemicals mixed together in a stew.

You need to make up a small sample batch for a demonstration to company executives. But the "recipe" has only been figured out for huge manufacturing batches. Your task is to scale it down to the right size. The original recipe makes 10,000 gallons -- you need about 500 gallons. Here's the recipe:

5,000 gallons liquid polycarbons
1,000 gallons binding agent
2,500 gallons bleaching agent
1,500 gallons lycra
