Real-Life Math -- Solution

Here are your calculations:

Cash

Bill Value# of billsMathTotal Value
$5205 x 20$100
$101510 x 15$150
$205020 x 50$1,000

Subtotal = $1,250

Checks

Charge# of salesMathTotal Value
Individual$50650 x 6$300
Couple$10010100 x 10$1,000
Table$3509*350 x 9$3,150

* You know you sold 9 tables because 25 tables total - (10 couples + 6 individuals) = 9.

Total Deposit = Cash + Checks
Total Deposit = $1,250 + $4,450
Total Deposit = $5,700

"We definitely use math in every fund-raising event," says Leslie Keirstead, who fund-raises on both a professional and volunteer basis.

"For example, when we put on a fund-raising dinner, we have a goal that we want to reach. We know that the dinner costs a certain amount per plate. We have to figure out how many plates we have to sell to break even [neither make money or lose money] and how many to reach our goal."

Another common way math is used in fund-raising is in recording what is being deposited into the bank account. This is what we did in our example. In large fund-raising efforts, you might make a bank deposit each day. Smaller-fund raising efforts might only deposit funds once a week.
