Real-Life Communication

The catering business has no shortage of competition. Some caterers say it seems like every day, someone is leaving the restaurant business to strike out on their own.

That competition means each caterer must carve out a niche to stay ahead of the pack.

Your task is to find a niche that will make potential customers choose your company over every other listed in the phone book. Think about what your niche will be. Then write a promotional brochure, or web page welcome, that will help customers understand what makes you special. Try to be creative -- finding a niche means you must be unique.

Make sure to cover at least these aspects:

  • Cuisine: You want to make burritos your signature item.
  • Decor or theme: You could consider offering Mexican nights, complete with burritos and tacos and waiters wearing ponchos and Mexican hats.
  • Price point: Some caterers try to target the high end of the market, offering top-quality food and prices to match. Others choose more mainstream prices to attract a larger clientele.

Whatever you decide, caterers say the key is to bring some of your personality into the business. That's how to make it stand out.
