Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You put the client's money into cash.

This was the real-life decision made by portfolio manager Mike Ward. His strategy in these types of cases is to "show them the historical data that suggests a buy and hold strategy beats out a market timing strategy over the long term."

With this particular client, "I tried to convince him that he should stay invested. We had several meetings to discuss this point. Finally he decided to put his money in cash and missed out on a pretty good rally."

It was an awkward situation afterwards. It is not always possible to keep a client when either party has experienced a loss of confidence. But in this case, Ward worked to preserve the relationship.

Experience can sometimes be the best teacher, for professionals and clients alike.
