Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Part of your job as a coroner is communicating with the family of the deceased. You are attending a seminar about communicating with children after a death in the family. Here are the answers to the questions.

1. Are euphemisms helpful when talking to children about death?

No. Euphemisms may confuse a child or create unnecessary fears. Be direct about what happened.

2. Should you talk to children about heaven?

This depends on the religious beliefs of the child. If you don't know the child's religion, it is best to avoid the subject. Religions have different beliefs about death and the after-life. Children from non-religious families may not be familiar with ideas of heaven and it will not be helpful.

3. How much time should you spend with a child after they have heard news of the death?

The child needs time to understand the situation and to voice questions. The amount of time will vary depending on the age and each individual child. You should be sensitive to individual needs.
