Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You stick with the call.

Even though you aren't positive about the decision, you stick to your guns. "The touchdown call stands," you say. The team that scored this touchdown goes on to win the game and secure first place in their division.

The linesman who advised you to discount the touchdown is angry with you for ignoring his assessment of the situation. After all, officiating teams are supposed to work as teams.

After the game, you decide to review the game footage on videotape. Watching the same touchdown again, you realize the receiver lied to you. The ball bounced before he caught it, just as the linesman said. Your refusal to listen to other members of the officiating crew and change your ruling resulted in an unfair win for a team.

"A good umpire must be able to listen, able to take [advice] from someone junior, and willing to learn ideas that don't seem right but may still work," says Utah umpire Craig Friedley.
