Real-Life Communication -- Solution

You are working with a baby that has cerebral palsy. These are the answers you give to the child's parents:

1.  What does the word palsy mean in the term cerebral palsy?

Cerebral refers to the two halves of the brain. Palsy describes any disorder that causes a person to lose control of their movement.

2.  Is cerebral palsy due to a muscle or nerve disorder?

Cerebral palsy has nothing to do with muscle or nerve development. It is caused by faulty development in the brain.

3.  Name a few types of motor tasks that an individual with cerebral palsy may have difficulty with.

He may have difficulty writing, cutting with scissors, maintaining balance or walking. He might also move involuntarily -- he may drool uncontrollably, for instance.
