Real-Life Communication

In most cases, professional cyclists have sponsors like banks, insurance companies and sports equipment manufacturers. These companies are interested in the promotion of their products along with their company names. In order to promote these names, professional cyclists will often be asked to go on promotional tours.

"Public speaking is a large part of what we do for our sponsors," former pro Ron Hayman says. "It comes with the territory, so you get used to it."

These tours include public speaking engagements at functions such as sports banquets and school assemblies.

Talking to elementary school kids is one of the most common types of presentations cyclists are asked to make, says Alison Dunlap, a competitive road racer.

She recommends you prepare a presentation in advance and then make small adjustments depending on the grade level of your audience.

You're a professional cyclist and you must give a talk to a group of Grade 4 students about professional cycling. Write a short speech that you would give to these students. Be sure to discuss such topics as ability, training, commitment and the thrill of racing.
