Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You try to pass him and win the race.

Since the other racer has expended more energy fighting the wind, the odds are good that you can pass him and take the victory. By doing so, you will receive the adulation that goes along with winning and also the largest share of the prize money.

However, you will also have to break your word and will probably lose the respect and trust of the other professional racers.

"In that situation, there is no question that I would finish second," says cyclist Clara Hughes. While some cyclists in similar situations do go against their word, that doesn't make it right. "When deals are made, you stick by them."

"You race with these people every weekend, so your relationship with other racers is important to your career," agrees Laura Van Gilder, a professional cyclist. "Racers are a really friendly, tight-knit group. You've always got to try and maintain the integrity of that."
