Real-Life Math -- Solution

If you are going to make it there by 8 a.m., that leaves you 8 hours to make the trip.

At 65 mph, you can travel:

65 x 8 = 520 miles in 8 hours

The furthest you can go is 520 miles by 8 a.m.

That means there are:

570 - 520 = 50 miles left over

and therefore,

50 miles x 60 minutes / 65 mph = 46.15 minutes

At 65 mph, it will take you another 46.15 minutes to cover the additional 50 miles. You'll have to tell your dispatcher you'll be about three-quarters of an hour late.

"As a trucker, you're constantly having to figure out how fast you can get somewhere," says Archie Archibald, a trucker. "You need to be able to do the math to make your bosses happy."
