Real-Life Math

You are Card Clown for children. Whenever they pick up a card of a certain suit, you begin a different action. For example, if a child picks up a card with a spade, you begin honking your nose and wiggling your ears. If she picks up a heart, you begin to tap dance.

"On the job, you need math to be able to work out some of your skits, but that's about it," says Bernie Levene, a clown.

  1. You have a stack of cards: 13 with diamonds, 13 with clubs, 13 with spades and 13 with hearts. What is the probability that the child you ask to help you with your trick will flip up a card with a heart? What is the possibibility she will flip up a card with a spade?
  2. You decide that you would like to make it more likely that the child picks up a heart, so you take out all the clubs and substitute them with 13 more hearts. Now what is the probability that she will flip up a heart?
