Real-Life Math

Orthodontists are experts at working with their hands. They craft lightweight metal and plastic into braces strong enough to make teeth straight. But they run across math on the job nearly every day.

You are an orthodontist. You are having your first meeting with a new patient and her parents. The patient is anxious about what's going to happen to her mouth. The parents are anxious about how much it's all going to cost.

You examine the patient and conclude that she is going to need the following treatment:

  • A full complement of braces and bands for 16 months
  • Follow-up treatment with a retainer for 6 months

The family wants to know the price, so you try to do a quick estimate for them. What price do you tell them to expect to pay?

  • The hardware for the braces and bands will cost $1,100
  • The patient will make one visit per month at a cost of $40 per visit
  • The retainer will cost $650
