Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You tell her that you do not think she needs the braces and refuse to take her on as a patient.

You may be right, but what will her reaction be? She could accept your professional opinion and shelve the idea of the braces. Or she could find another orthodontist. She might also spread the word that you make your patients' decisions for them.

Dr. Antonios Mamandras is the chairman and director of a graduate program in orthodontics. He says orthodontists make business decisions in addition to medical decisions.

"They have to make [business] decisions as well: whom to fire, whom to hire, how to structure their office," says Mamandras.
