Real-Life Math -- Solution

First, do the easy costs:

$650 (retainer) + $1,100 (braces, bands) = $1,750

Now, the cost of visits:

16 months (main treatment) + 6 months (follow-up) = 22 months
22 visits x $40 each = $880

Now the total:

$880 + $1,750 = $2,630

You tell them to expect to spend $2,630.

Most orthodontists have some post-secondary calculus under their belts, even though they don't use it in the office.

Dr. Robert Keim is the program director in the school of dentistry at the University of Southern California. "[Math] isn't all that important in the day-to-day practice of orthodontics. But getting here, it's very important," he says.
