Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You get out and go home.

You are, of course, free to leave. Though many overseas contracts last two years, most allow teachers to leave for family emergencies and other reasons.

If you go home, however, your experience as an English teacher may not be as valuable on a resume because of the short duration. You will probably find yourself answering questions for a long time about why you decided to quit so soon after you started.

And only you know whether this move is about helping your family or retreating to the security of the family nest. Be honest with yourself.

You left home for the challenge of moving to a different country and making it on your own. Are you really willing to give up so easily?

Jennifer Pearson Terell is the senior program coordinator of a TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages) program. "You have to make decisions about everything, but [you] won't be hired for your ability to make decisions."
