Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Here are sample directions:

  1. Wash hands with soap and dry them.
  2. Open contact lens case.
  3. Gently remove one lens. Be careful not to tear lens.
  4. Rinse lens thoroughly with saline solution.
  5. Place lens on tip of left index finger. It should rest like an upright bowl. Make sure it is not inside out.
  6. Fill the "bowl" with saline solution.
  7. Use index finger of right hand to hold up right eyelid. At same time, use middle finger of left hand to gently pull down skin beneath right eye. This is to prevent blinking.
  8. Slowly and gently place the lens on your right eye with left index finger. Do not press against the eye. The lens should gently move into place.
  9. Once lens is in place, blink several times. There should be no irritation. If eye stings, do not rub it. Instead, remove lens and repeat steps four through eight.
  10. Use same steps, with opposite hand, to put in left lens.

Giving directions is one important way printing machine operators use communication skills. Good communication skills ensure things run smoothly.

Poor communication can lead to mistakes. Mistakes can hurt people and waste money.

Printing machine operators work with machines that can cause injury. Also, they work with hazardous chemicals. Being able to give clear directions and listen well helps prevent accidents.

Printing machine operators communicate with supervisors, clients, and other workers.

Printing machine operator Graham Pratt says he has to tell other workers what a client wants. Problems due to misunderstandings can be a costly nuisance.

"If you don't say it right, then usually it's a big headache," says Pratt. "You can ruin a lot of paper in a big hurry."
