Data Recovery Specialist

Real-Life Decision Making

Computer data gets lost for a number of reasons. A data recovery specialist will see everything from software corruption to operator errors. That's right -- sometimes people are to blame. Even the data recovery specialist might be to blame.

You're a data recovery specialist hired by a company to retrieve data from a hard drive. You disconnect a hard drive that's currently hooked up to one of your computers and hook up a new one in order to load data retrieval software into it.

While you're on your lunch break, a co-worker sees the hard drive connected to the computer. He thinks it's the old hard drive, the one you disconnected, which was supposed to be wiped clean and sent away for recycling. So he disconnects it and erases all the data.

When you return from lunch, you discover what's happened. You realize it was your fault for not labeling the drive or telling your co-worker that you'd switched the drives. What do you do?
