Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You shut off the power.

You contact a social services agency and they supply the tenants with some blankets, battery-powered space heaters and lamps. It's not an easy or a popular decision to make, but you feel you have no choice. The house is old. It would go up like a tinderbox if a fire started, and by the looks of the wiring, the chances of a fire are good.

This is the real-life decision made by electrical inspector Chuck Webber.

"It's not easy shutting off someone's power. It's a last resort for me," says Webber. "But for the safety of the people in this apartment building, I had to shut it down. You can't waive your responsibility to safety just because it makes you unpopular."
