Real-Life Math -- Solution

There is an error in the total. The buy 2, get 1 free discount was applied incorrectly. One set of 50 photos for the parents was free because they were the same (third reprint) as the set for the other parents (1 bought) and the same as a subset of the bride and groom's set of reprints (2 bought).

But the photographer has only applied a discount for 6 reprints from the wedding party member photos when the discount should be on 10 pictures. The first set (of 5 photos) for the 6 party members must be paid for (5 x $2 = $10) because it is comprised of copies from the bride and groom's 200 reprints and represents the "2" in "buy 2."

The second wedding party set is then free, the third and fourth sets must be paid for (buy 2), the fifth set is free (get 1 free), and the sixth set must be paid for. Thus, out of the 6 sets of 5, 4 sets must be paid for and 2 sets are free.

Two (sets) times 5 photos equals 10 pictures free. Add this to the 50 free pictures from the parents' set. The "promotional discount" line should read: "60 photos x $2 = $120 discount." The subtotal reprint fee is changed to $540, and the final total due would be $1,870.
