Real-Life Communication -- Solution

You are an occupational therapist assistant answering questions to prove your knowledge about strokes. This is how you answer:

1. Name two risk factors of stroke.

High blood pressure, cigarette smoking, heart disease, diabetes and transient ischemic attacks increase the risk of having a stroke.

2. What is a transient ischemic attack?

A transient ischemic attack is a small stroke that lasts only for a few minutes or hours. It should never be ignored and can be treated with drugs or surgery.

3. Name two symptoms of a stroke.

  • Numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Confusion or trouble speaking or understanding speech
  • Trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Trouble walking, dizziness or loss of balance or coordination
  • Severe headache with no known cause
