Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are an occupational therapist assistant. You are working with a patient who has broken his back.

The occupational therapist wants Maurice to do 4 sets of stretches. Each set is comprised of 6 stretches held for 3 seconds each. She also wants Maurice to rest for 10 seconds in between each set and after the last set of stretches.

You have allotted 2 minutes for Maurice to do the required stretches. Have you given him enough time to do them?

6 stretches x 3 seconds = 18 seconds
4 sets x 18 seconds = 72 seconds
Rest for 10 seconds between each set and after the last set:
4 x 10 seconds = 40 seconds
72 seconds + 40 seconds = 112 seconds

You have 2 minutes. How many seconds is that?

60 seconds per minute x 2 minutes = 120 seconds

You only need 112 seconds, so Maurice has enough time to complete the exercises.
