Real-Life Decision Making

Transferring a credit card number over the internet requires careful security. Cryptographers are the people who design and test the software to ensure that critical information is only seen by the business you've contacted.

You're approached by a company that wants to auction art over the internet. They want you to design a system where several buyers can meet online and place their bids. Some of the items to be auctioned will be worth more than half a million dollars.

The company wants you to design a system of encryption to protect their customers' financial information from hackers. They're willing to pay several thousand dollars for the system. You're concerned because of the number of PCs that will be entering the site and transmitting data. You know that even the best encryption can't protect individual users if access to their PC is unprotected. This is a real dilemma.

The money is promising, but you're not sure you can deliver what the company wants. In cryptography your reputation is always on the line. Would you trust your secrets to someone whose last mistake cost hundreds of thousands of dollars?

The company is waiting for an answer. What are you going to do, explain your concerns and turn down the work, or outline your concerns but attempt the job anyway?
