Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You turn down the work.

You explain your concerns and decide the company has unrealistic expectations of security. You have your professional reputation to think of. The company finds someone else to do the job. To date, you haven't heard of any problems with the site, but you still think it's just a matter of time.

Deciding whether to take on a job often depends on what the employer says is an acceptable risk. In a case like this, the best encryption in the world isn't going to help if individual PC users are unprotected.

"The message back and forth between the two computers can be secure, but the thing is, if someone has hacked into either end machine, then what's the point of having security end to end if at the end somebody has access to the data?" says cryptographer Arthur Low. "So you not only need to protect your communications, but [also] your data that's residing on your machine and who accesses it."

There's also the question of personal liability. If a cryptographer says a system is secure and it isn't, he or she could be sued for a lot of money -- and no insurance company will cover cryptographers for personal liability.
