Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You attempt the job.

You outline your concerns and the company says it's comfortable with that degree of risk. They're willing to modify their plans to suit your security concerns. You think the project is interesting -- and prestigious -- so you attempt the job. In the end, you're happy with the project and the company is happy with your work.

You have to ensure your clients understand that 100 percent security is not possible, says cryptographer Greg Rose.

"It's meaningless to say that something's secure," says Rose. "You have to say secure from whom, secure against whom, secure against what attacks?"

Some systems are more secure than others, of course.

"If the people who are bidding in this auction are big banks, then there's sort of an implicit assumption that their endpoint is secure because they're a big bank," says Rose. "So in that context it's meaningful to say all we have to do is secure the communication, [because] the end points will take care of themselves. You have to do that kind of analysis before you can make such statements."
