Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

Plant different varieties of peach trees

As a farmer, it is up to you to decide what to plant. You've just bought some new land and you've decided to plant peaches. Now you're deciding what variety of peach tree to plant.

Peaches on the same tree ripen individually. You can't pick all the fruit from one tree at the same time. Different varieties also ripen at different times. You decide to spread out your harvest by planting different varieties.

Gina Harfman grows peaches on her small-scale farm. She sells the peaches at her family's fruit stand. She chose to plant different varieties of peach trees to spread out the harvest from mid-July to late-September.

"It's good to have a constant flow of fruit in the fruit stand," she says.

When mid-July comes, you begin picking your first variety of peaches. You have to walk through your peach block daily. You pick about six boxes of peaches every day, which all sell out at your fruit stand. When one variety of peaches finishes, there is another one becoming ripe. You have a constant supply of fresh peaches until October.
