Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You fight against the building of the tourist mall to maintain the birds' habitat.

This is the real-life decision of ornithologist Ron Rohrbaugh. "One of the tough decisions we have to make is how to manage the birds' habitat," he says.

Rohrbaugh says he helps decide which portion of the forest should be kept, and which part can be cut down to make way for buildings, such as new malls. The birds nesting in the area help determine this balance.

"But if you're dealing with a threatened or an endangered bird, then things change," says Rohrbaugh. "You have to work much harder and there will possibly be legal ramifications to keep buildings out of their habitat."
