Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are an ornithologist. You are calculating the size of an owl and a penguin from photographs and sketches. These are the answers you come up with:

You have a photograph of the owl showing the bird to be 2 inches long. If the photograph is 1/8 the actual size of the bird, how many inches is the owl? How many feet is that?

1/8y = 2 inches
y = 2 inches x 8
y = 16 inches

The owl is 16 inches tall.

In feet:
12 inches = 1 foot
16 inches / 12 inches per foot = 1.3 feet

The owl is 1.3 feet tall.

A colleague at the office is putting together statistical information about the penguin. He has a sketch of a penguin that is 1 inch tall. If this drawing is 1/36 of the actual size, how tall is the actual penguin?

1/36y = 1 inch
y = 1 inch x 36
y = 36 inches

The penguin is actually 36 inches tall.

In feet:
12 inches = 1 foot
36 inches / 12 inches per foot = 3 feet

The penguin is actually 3 feet tall.
