One of the greatest dangers a diver can face is nitrogen narcosis. If the case is severe enough, it can cause brain damage and even death.

Nitrogen narcosis is something all divers should be aware of, although recreational divers are unlikely to be at much risk for it.

The risk of getting nitrogen narcosis increases the deeper you dive and the longer you're underwater. The cause of the affliction is nitrogen -- a common element that is an essential part of the air we breathe. Nitrogen isn't a problem for our bodies when we're breathing it on dry land or in shallow depths.

But when we're breathing nitrogen deep underwater, it builds up in our bodies. The longer a diver is in the deep water, the more the nitrogen builds up.

Making sure every new student understands nitrogen narcosis and how to prevent it is a crucial part of the scuba instructor's job.

Do some research on nitrogen narcosis. Write a few paragraphs about what it is and how to prevent it. How would you reassure your diving students that they can prevent nitrogen narcosis if they follow proper precautions?
