Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are a customer service representative at a bank. You have finished your shift and are counting your cash to make sure that your cash drawer balances.

First, find out how much cash you are expected to have.

Opening Cash: 1500

Cash received: 6000

Cash paid out: 4500

1500 + 6000 = 7500

7500 - 4500 = 3000

Your closing cash should be $3,000.

Now, add up the cash you counted.

6 x 100 = 600

87 x 20 = 1740

42 x 10= 420

35 x 5= 175

23 x 1= 23

Change = 42

600 + 1740 + 420 + 175 + 23 + 42 = 3000

You have $3,000, so you balanced. Good work today!

"Math is very important because simple math and organization will help ensure that your cash drawer will be balanced at the end of every day," says John Callahan. He works at a bank in Chicago, Illinois.
